June 29, 2020 (SSNN) –  South Sudan’s minister of foreign affairs has announced that the country will – for the first time – open an embassy in Japan, one of the Asian countries that have provided millions of dollars in funding.

The announcement by South Sudan’s top diplomat came during a meeting between President Salva Kiir and the outgoing Japanese diplomat in South Sudan, Mr. Seiji Okada whose term has just ended.

“South Sudan is going to open an embassy in Japan to strengthen the working cooperation between South Sudan and Japan,” she said stressing that “the relations between South Sudan and Japan are cordial.”

For his part, ambassador Okada said that he “will brief his holiness, Pope Francis, on the status of the peace in South Sudan.”

The Japanese diplomat is the new Japanese Ambassador to the Vatican.
