November 19, 2024 (N’DJAMENA) – The United Arab Emirates has warned the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) it may cut off support if the paramilitary group fails to seize control of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, a source close to the Chadian presidency told Sudan Tribune. Chad plays a key logistical and military support role for the RSF, allowing the use of its airports and border crossings. El Fasher has been under RSF siege since May, with intense fighting but little change in territorial control. The source said the RSF is seeking alternative support, including bartering gold for weapons via Nyala airport, which has recently increased activity. Reports indicate renewed activity at the Sengo gold mine in South Darfur. Sudan Tribune could not independently confirm these claims. The RSF has progressively gained control across much of Darfur. Government forces remain entrenched in El Fasher, having partially broken the siege. The city has seen the fiercest fighting, with the RSF suffering significant losses, including commander Ali Yaqoub, killed in June. Both sides continue to mobilize fighters. Africa Intelligence, a French intelligence newsletter, reported the UAE plans to reduce spending of at least $2 billion allegedly used for RSF military and …

November 19, 2024 (AL JAZIRAH State) – Reports of rampant sexual violence against women and girls are emerging from Sudan’s Al Jazirah state, where ongoing conflict has displaced more than 135,000 people. Healthcare workers and counsellors are documenting horrific abuses, including the rape and sexual assault of females ranging in age from 6 to 60. The fighting, which began on Oct. 20, has claimed the lives of over 100 people and severely disrupted access to healthcare. UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, reports that a significant number of women and girls are missing from displacement camps. Some are feared to have been abducted or killed. Survivors who reached neighbouring states describe harrowing ordeals. Some witnessed women committing suicide to escape being raped by armed men. Others recounted how family members gave them knives and instructed them to kill themselves rather than be subjected to sexual violence. The stigma surrounding rape is so profound that many survivors remain in hiding, fearing for their safety and rejection by their communities. “Survivors of sexual violence are running away and hiding because their families have threatened to end their lives to wash away dishonour,” said a counsellor in Gedaref, who asked …

November 19, 2024 (TWIC) – Malaria remains a leading cause of illness and death among children in South Sudan, a country with a fragile health system and annually faces flooding as well as poverty. Despite the predictable recurrence of malaria peaks, immunization coverage remains inadequate, contributing to overcrowded health facilities and an unbroken cycle of severe cases, an international medical charity said in a statement. .According to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), in response to these recurrent malaria outbreaks, MSF teams in Warrap State’s Twic County have implemented malaria prevention mass drug administration (MDA) and supported the Ministry of Health (MoH) in malaria vaccination rounds in Mayen Abun for the second year in a row. These preventive measures, it stated, have contributed to a significant reduction in malaria cases and severity, especially among vulnerable children. Adior Manut, from the Turalei internally displaced people’s camp in Mayen Abun in Twic County, said her children benefited from treatment by MSF and have not suffered from malaria. “When the MDA started, I took my five children and got the drugs to prevent malaria. None of them got sick,” she said, adding “I appreciate that because I can’t imagine what my children would have been like …

November 19, 2024 (EL FASHER) – More than 3,000 people have fled El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, amid escalating clashes between the army and its allies against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a spokesperson for the General Coordination of Displaced Persons and Refugee Camps in Darfur said on Tuesday. Adam Rajal said in a statement that around 642 families, comprising 3,210 individuals, have fled to the Jebel Marra mountains, seeking refuge from the intensifying fighting. “The displaced are living in extremely harsh humanitarian conditions, with a lack of basic necessities such as food, medicine, and water,” Rajal said, urging donors to increase financial support to meet the growing needs of those displaced. The latest exodus comes as the RSF seeks to gain control of El Fasher, one of the last strongholds of the central government in Darfur. Fighting between the army and the RSF, which began in mid-April, has intensified in recent weeks, with both sides using heavy weaponry. Eyewitnesses told Sudan Tribune that the RSF shelled the northern and western neighbourhoods of El Fasher with heavy artillery before engaging in direct confrontations with the joint force in the northeast axis. The 6th Infantry Division said on its …

November 19, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of the Sovereign Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), rejected the Russia-vetoed UN Security Council resolution on Sudan, stating that it failed to address the country’s core concerns. Speaking at the Economic Conference in Port Sudan, al-Burhan criticized the resolution for not acknowledging the role of foreign actors in supplying weapons to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Al-Burhan stressed that Sudan’s post-war relationships with international actors will be determined by their stance during the conflict. He accused the RSF of exploiting previous ceasefires negotiated in Jeddah to re-arm and intensify their siege of cities. The army chief reiterated his commitment to finding a solution internally and rejecting external interference. He declared that victory against the RSF was imminent, and the war was turning to favour the SAF. Al-Burhan outlined conditions for accepting a ceasefire, insisting on the complete withdrawal of RSF forces from all occupied areas and their assembly at designated cantonment sites. This withdrawal, he stated, is crucial to lift the siege of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, and ensure the free movement of civilians and aid. “Sudan will not accept any ceasefire …
