Oct 27th, 2019 (SSNN)-In response to devastating floods that have affected nearly one million people in the country, the World Food Program (WFP) on Saturday donated Russian-made SHERP All-Terrain vehicles as part of its efforts to help flood-affected communities recover from months of suffering in Maban County.

On Friday, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that across 32 counties in Jonglei, Upper Nile, Warrap, Eastern Equatoria, Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Unity and Lakes, an estimated 908,000 people have been affected by the ongoing natural disaster, putting them at higher risk of waterborne diseases.

More than 60 per cent of the flood-affected counties are currently classified as facing extreme levels of acute malnutrition, mostly impacting children and new mothers.

The UN office warned that the seasonal floods will continue to affect flood-prone areas until the end of November.

“The rains are likely to continue at least until the end of November and put more people at risk. The heavy rains have hit areas that were already facing high humanitarian needs.”

It further estimated that about 17,000 hectares of productive land, equal to some 20,000 metric tons of food production, have been destroyed.

Launched in 2016, Sherp ATV is an amphibious vehicle designed specifically for off-roading and has
paddle-like treads that propels the machine forward while in the water.
