June 25, 2020 (SSNN) – The United States is working to remove Sudan from the list of state sponsor of terrorism, a top US diplomat said Wednesday.

Michael Pompeo, the US secretary of state said during a press conference in Washington on Wednesday that a team of US diplomats was working along-side Sudan to remove the country from the designation which was slapped on Sudan by the US administration in 1997.

Pompeo said the two countries were working together to come to a conclusion to remove the country from the blacklist.

“I spoke with the prime minister (Abdallah Hamdok) just a couple of hours ago. We’re working very closely with them to try and come to a solution so that we can get the right outcome for their new leadership and for the Sudanese people,” Pompeo said.

“My team on the ground there is working very closely with the Sudanese leadership to try and get a really good outcome. And I’m hopeful that that will be forthcoming in the weeks ahead,” he added.

Since the removal of its long-time dictator in a nationwide protest in April 2019, Sudan has been seeing warming of ties with Washington which has so far promised to support the removal of Sudan’s pariah status.
