February 23, 2020 (SSNN)—The US Ambassador to the United Nations, Kelly Craft on behalf of the US government, has joined the rest of the world in welcoming the formation of South Sudan’s coalition government on Saturday.

“South Sudan is a nation longing for peace, stability and a brighter future for its people. I welcome the decision by the government and opposition parties to form a new, transitional unity government,” Kelly said in a brief statement.

She commended South Sudan’s leaders for bringing peace peace and stability in a country torn apart by years of violence.

“This is the first in a series of critical steps that must be taken to bring dignity and peace to the people of South Sudan.”

Kelly noted that with the successful formation of the transitional government, South Sudan’s leaders must build on such steps to translate hope into a meaningful future.

She urged President Salva Kiir Mayardit and opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar to demonstrate commitment, greater determination and, above all, great courage, sparing no effort in building trust.

“The real work—the hardest work—begins now, and I urge President Salva Kiir, Dr. Riek Machar, and all of South Sudan’s leaders to show the courage and fortitude needed at this moment to translate hope into a better future for South Sudan.”

She personally reaffirmed her commitment to support the people of South Sudan in their pursuit of peace, unity and stability.

“I am personally prepared to assist in these efforts, as is the government of the United States. Peace, security, and prosperity are within grasp, and now is the moment to reach.”
