Nov 5th, 2019 (SSNN)-The U.S. government urges its citizens to be very vigilant about their safety when traveling to South Sudan, and also announces that they should be enrolled in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) – a free service offered by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs, that allows US citizens to register their journey with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
“The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens who are contemplating travel to South Sudan, to review the most recent travel advisory (South Sudan Country Information) and to exercise extreme caution when traveling in all parts of the country, including Juba. For any travel outside of Juba it is recommended that you have a minimum of two vehicles, and appropriate food, water, recovery and medical equipment in case of mechanical failure or other emergency,” the U.S Embassy in South Sudan said on Tuesday.
The US Embassy in South Sudan reminds its citizens of strict adherence to advisory warnings and extreme caution, stressing that the wave of crimes has become rampant throughout the country.
“Violent crimes, such as carjacking, shootings, ambushes, assaults, robberies, and kidnappings are common throughout South Sudan, including in Juba. Travelers should avoid demonstrations and public gatherings; events intended to be peaceful can sometimes become violent.”
Last month, the British government, through its Foreign and Commonwealth Office, issued a similar statement, warning that Britons living in South Sudan should leave the country immediately, noting that the level of intercommunal violence remains high across the country.
