Dec 4th, 2019 (SSNN)-The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is calling for an end to intercommunal violence that has reportedly claimed lives of more than 70 people and wounded an unspecified number of civilians between the Gak and Manuer communities.

“This fighting must stop. We are urging the communities involved and their leaders to put an end to the violence and to come together in reconciliation and peace for the good of their people”, said David Shearer, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS.

In response to quelling the violence that engulfed the area, the United Nations immediately deployed more than 70 heavily armed UN peacekeepers from Nepal.

The UNMISS stressed that with the decline in violence since the signing of the peace agreement, inter-communal violence and revenge killings continue to pose serious threats to communities in South Sudan.

“The peacekeepers will continue to patrol the area in the coming weeks to provide a protective presence.”

The UN peacekeepers said that they were warmly received by authorities and community members who expressed willingness to join peace-building efforts.

South Sudan seceded from Sudan in 2011, and two years after it gained independence, another civil war erupted in 2013, an ongoing conflict that has led to the proliferation of small arms among the local population.
