UN chief António saddened as Sudan’s military plane crash kills 18 people including children

January 4th, 2020 (SSNN)—The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has been saddened at the sudden death of 18 Sudanese people who passed away on Thursday following a plane crash in West Darfur state.

“The Secretary-General is saddened at the tragic loss of lives in the airplane crash yesterday near El Geneina in Sudan. He conveys his heartfelt sympathies to the families of the victims, including those of a staff member of the World Food Programme (WFP),” said the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

“The Secretary-General also extends his condolences to the people and Government of Sudan on this tragic event.”

On Thursday, a military plane, Antonov 12 crashed immediately after taking off from El Geneina airport in West Darfur State, killing 18, people.

“Seven crew members, three judges, and eight citizens including four children were killed in the incident,” Sudan’s military spokesperson confirmed on Friday.
