UN calls on South Sudan’s leaders to resolve pending issues ahead of November deadline
Nov 7th, 2019 (SSNN)- The United Nations Security Council calls on all parties to the peace agreement to resolve outstanding issues and expedite the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement before the formation of the national unity government scheduled for next week.
The UN statement came in the wake of a stalemate between the two sides over the formation of the long-awaited transitional government of national unity, in which the main armed opposition party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-IO, said it would not be part of the unity government if outstanding issues are not resolved.
“The members of the Security Council received a briefing on the situation in South Sudan from Undersecretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for South Sudan David Shearer,” the statement issued by the United Nations reads.
“The briefing was provided in the context of the approaching deadline of the 12 of November for parties to the peace agreement to form a revitalized transitional government of national unity,” the UN statement said.
The United Nations Security Council expressed concern that during their recent visit to South Sudan, its members “did not observe substantive progress on implementation of key elements of the peace agreement”.
The council members called on all parties to speed up the implementation of the peace agreement and to ensure that the key outstanding issues impeding the implementation of the peace process are fully addressed before the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity could be formed.
“The members of the Security Council call on the parties to make immediate progress on pre-transitional tasks including security arrangements, and a process for the resolution of the number and boundaries of states in order to allow for the peaceful formation of an inclusive transitional government.”
