U.S welcomes ‘Machar’s firm commitment’ to peace

The United States’ Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Tibor Nagy,

February 21, 2020 (SSNN)—The United States has welcomed the firm commitment of the opposition leader and First Vice-president Dr. Riek Machar, to ensuring that peace and stability return to South Sudan.

“We welcomes Dr. Machar’s firm commitment to form an inclusive unity government by February 22, following the government of South Sudan’s decision to return the country to its during the period of the transition,” twitted the United States’ Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Tibor Nagy.

On his part, the IGAD Special Envoy to the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden & Somalia (RESGAS) Nuur Mohamed Sheekh congratulated the South Sudanese leaders, particularly President Salva Kiir Mayardit and opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar for choosing peace over war.

“We at IGAD congratulate the leadership and the people of South Sudan for resolving [outstanding issues] and the international community for staying seized and supporting the aspirations of the people,” said Nuur.

Formation of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity 

On Thursday, President Kiir Salva Kiir Mayardit and Dr. Riek Machar agreed to form the long-awaited unity government on Saturday, paving the way for the displaced population to return to their homes.

“We agreed to form the government and that pending things will be discussed within a unity government,” he said.

Security Arrangements 

Kiir promised that his forces would be responsible for ensuring security in the capital, Juba, until the unified forces are fully graduated.

“I have taken this responsibility as the president. My forces will be responsible for security in Juba until the training of the unified forces is completed, and if there are still pending things, we will continue with discussions until we reach an agreement,” said President.
