U.S. lifts sanctions imposed on Israeli general over S. Sudan’s arms deals
February 28, 2020 (SSNN)—The United States Treasury Department on Thursday lifted sanctions slapped on a former Israeli general who was slapped with individual sanctions over accusations that he was supplying weapons to both the South Sudan government and opposition groups during the country’s conflict.
The US government levied the penalties against former Israel Defense Forces Major Gen. Israel Ziv after accusing him of cloaking sales of $150 million worth of weapons to the South Sudanese government by supplying them through an agricultural company.
Alongside Israel Ziv, the US targeted Obac William Olawo who was also designated by the Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) for being one of the leaders of entities whose action expanded or extend the conflict in South Sudan.
Responding to the decision by the US, the former Israel commander applauded the United States saying, “This was a crucial and challenging year but I believed all along that the U.S. authorities would ultimately reach the right conclusion and that American justice will prevail.”
