Support Ayod Flood Victims
August 27, 2020(SSNN) — Many villages in South Sudan, especially in Gawaar areas or Ayod county of Jonglei State, have been hit by a devastating flood that has destroyed houses and displaced hundreds of thousands of people. Unlike anything witnessed here before, the ongoing flood, which was triggered by heavy tropical rains that caused the River Nile to overflow , has been accelerated by two major incidents in Sudan: the collapse of Bout Dam in Sudan’s Blue Nile State that instantly destroyed more than 1,2000 houses and the collapse of a dyke that surround the White Nile.
These two major incidents tripled the magnitude of the flood and is making it impossible for the residents of Ayod and neighboring countries to build dykes to stop the flood and save lives. Since it reached Ayod county over two weeks ago, the devastating flood has displaced thousands of people and washed away crops and houses. In addition, water borne diseases such as malaria, pneumonia, eye infections and even snake bites have increased as people and animals are congested in upper areas that are not yet submerged by the flood .
The residents of Ayod county have tried to run to the major towns like Ayod, Wau and Mogok that have better natural drainage systems due to their typographies and the type of soil in these towns. Unlike the rest of the county that is situated predominantly on clay soil, the towns of Ayod, Wau and Mogok are situated in sandy soil and are also sounded by swamps and dams that were built by the pre-independent governments.
Though catastrophic and intimidating anywhere else in the county, the situation remains highly volatile in Ayod islands that are situated in the middle of the River Nile. More than five major islands that include Wan, Manime, Haat, Pakuem, Nyot, Pakur, Nyawit, and Rub-chieng-khor are found here and more than 64, 000 people, their livestock and other property remain at risk. Local residents are putting in great efforts to build dykes as their only last hopes to survive, however, more than building dykes is needed to save lives.
