Sudan’s PM Hamdok meets IMF Managing Director, discusses Sudan’s crippled economy

Dec 7th, 2019 (SSNN)-Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok on Friday met with the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, and according the IMF the two leaders discussed ways to overhaul the country’s deteriorating economy.

Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), said that she had held a fruitful meeting with the Sudanese leader where they discussed economic reforms in Sudan.

“I was pleased to meet Prime Minister Hamdok of Sudan today in Washington. We discussed recent economic developments in Sudan and the region.

The International Monetary Fund chief admitted that the Sudanese government is facing an economic crisis exacerbated by previous sanctions imposed by the international community during the leadership of former Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir.

“Sudan faces significant challenges, compounded by past sanctions and the legacy of conflict. We discussed the authorities’ economic reforms to restore macroeconomic stability and promote inclusive growth. We also highlighted the need for a significant increase in social transfers to the most vulnerable groups,” she said.

She explained that the IMF is actively working with the relevant authorities in an effort to improve Sudan’s dysfunctional economy.

“IMF staff is engaged with the authorities on how the Fund can further assist with their reform efforts and to help ensure that Sudan receives adequate external assistance. Donor support is crucial to help the country’s gradual recovery.”
