April 22nd (SSNN) – The head of the governing Sudanese Military Transitional Council (MTC) – Abdel Fattah Burhan – on Sunday confirmed that ex-president Omar Hassan Ahmed al-Bashir along with leading figures of his regime were all being detained at the notorious Kober prison in Khartoum.

This came after a week-long reports by local and some international media outlets that the ousted leader has been transferred to the Sudan’s largest prison where al-Bashir once detained his rivals and political dissidents during his rule.

“All the leading figures of the former regime, including al-Bashir and the commanders are all in prison and their property was confiscated,” Burhan – appearing in a military uniform – said on the state-ran Sudan TV.

The top army commander added that state security operatives were able to discover a sum of $350,000, €7 million and a few billions of Sudanese pounds in al-Bashir’s house pointing out that there is no political prisoner in the country and that senior figures in the security and intelligence service were made to retire after being investigated.

He vowed that the military council would question anyone who committed crimes before or during the recent demonstrations vowing to hand over the power to the people denying that they came through a military coup but in respond to ‘legitimate’ demand of the Sudanese people for the army to rein.

“We didn’t come with a coup, but with a popular revolution and we do not intend to stay in power,” Burhan said adding that the fight for restructuring the state would be a long walk. “Restructuring the state will take a long time due to the corruption problem within the state institutions.”

The army early this month ousted al-Bashir following almost four months after protest started in Northern state over bread price hike later on turning to anti-al-Bashir protest calling for him to resign and hand over power to the people.
