Sudan’s defense minister resigns as head of transitional military council, appoints successor
April 12th 2019 (SSNN) – Sudan’s Defense Minister and former First Vice-President, Awad Ibn Oauf has surprisingly resigned a day after taking oath as head of Sudan’s military council following the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir.
“I – the head of the military council – announce I am giving up the post,” Ibn Auf said, adding he took the decision to preserve unity of the armed forces.
On Thursday, Ibn Oauf announced – during a statement to the nation and broadcasted live on the Sudan TV – the ouster of president Omar al-Bashir who has been in power since 1989.
The defense minister said he resigned as part of his respect for the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
1st Lt. Gen. Abdel Fatah Abdel Rahman is now the new head of the transitional military council. He is expected to take oath of office later tonight.
