December 22nd, 2019 (SSNN)-The Sudanese authorities have opened a lawsuit against former officials and military commanders who were responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Darfur during the leadership of former Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir.

Speaking upon his arrival from the United Arab Emirates, the Sudanese legal expert and prosecutor, Tagelsir al-Heber, revealed that the Sudanese government had taken a final decision to open an investigation into crimes and crimes against humanity committed against Sudanese communities in the Darfur region by military officers allied to former Sudanese leader Omar Hassan al-Bashir.

“We have launched an investigation into the crimes committed in Darfur from 2003,” prosecutor Tagelsir al-Heber said on his arrival.

Sudan’s President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has been wanted by the International Criminal Court as a ringleader for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide against the Sudanese population in the Darfur region since 2009.

Despite numerous attempts by the International Criminal Court to extradite Bashir to The Hague, the Sudanese authorities were resistant, and refused to hand over their leader to the court.

In 2013, while attending a two-day African Union Summit, al-Bashir secretly fled Nigeria after he learned that a group of lawyers were seeking to open a case against him, in an attempt to prevent him from leaving the country.

Earlier this month, former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was sentenced to years in prison on corruption charges.
