Oct 8th, 2019 ( SSNN)-As the Sudanese unity government begins to promote human rights, the first match of the Sudanese Women’s Football League has been formed, marking a turning point in the country’s past history.

Over the past 30 years, under the authoritarian leadership of former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, the Sudanese government imposed restrictive measures and banned women from participating in sporting activities.

However, following the overthrow of former President Omar Hassan al-Bashir in April this year, the newly formed Sudanese Unity Government under the leadership of PM Abdalla Hamdok, has taken a good step towards democratic transformation that will allow liberal policies in the country.

“I am very happy because we were able to overcome the customs and traditions that prevented us from exercising our rights as women in sports,” said one football player identified as Azza Adel.

Speaking to the media in the Sudanese capital Khartoum, Sara Mohamed Said, a member of the Women’s League, explained that during the country’s past history, women were not allowed to engage in all sporting activities.

“Previously, if you were told that there is a woman playing football, most people, especially Sudanese people, saw it as a bad thing,” says Sara Mohamed Said, the captain of the Sudan Eagles.

She praised God for bringing the country to the path of peace and democracy that will allow everyone to exercise their rights without intimidation.

“Currently, thank God, there is a wonderful development, and football is very beautiful and people do not mind women playing the sport,” she said.
