Sudan puts deportation of rebel officer to Juba on hold over coronavirus

April 3, 2020 (SSNN) — Sudanese government on Thursday put the deportation of a South Sudanese rebel commander on hold over the outbreak of the coronavirus, a senior security official said from Khartoum on Friday.

The deportation, the official said, was scheduled for today, of four South Sudanese rebel officer captured in January in the country’s capital Khartoum would have been done a week ago but was halted after Sudanese defense minister died.

“The process could have been completed last week. But the sudden demise of the defense minister led to the decision to put it on hold until this week,” he said.

The official who spoke on condition of anonymity said the deportation was them again put on hold on Thursdays until further notice over the spread of the coronavirus which has infected around 10 people in Sudan and none in South Sudan.

“This Thursday, it was again put on hold because if the coronavirus pandemic which has threatened to kill hundreds here in our country,” he said.
