South Sudanese civil society groups participate in IGAD-led training on Violent Extremism
Nov 24, 2019 (SSNN) – The IGAD Centre of Excellence for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (ICEPCVE) held a three-day training in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi from 18 to 20 November 2019 with support from Danish Government.
The training aims to strengthen communication, planning and methods to achieve the organizational strategic objectives of the organization working on preventing and combating violent extremism in the region.
The training was attended by representatives of civil society organizations from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and South Sudan, as well as Tanzania to discuss the role of civil society leaders in preventing violent extremism in the region.
The civil society leaders urge the political leaders to use right channels of communications in order to prevent violent and conflict when dealing with sensitive matters in their countries.
Dr. Simon Nyambura, Executive Director at the IGAD Centre of Excellence for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (ICEPCVE) said strengthen of civil society a key role in the democratic society.
He urged civil society groups to build societal resilience and provide avenues for strengthening human dignity so that local people can decide their own future through collective regional advocacy and develop alternative channels for nonviolent conflict transformation.
Ter Manyang Gatwech, National coordinator of Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) human rights organization based in Uganda stressed that advocating for transitional justice, human rights and peace building is part of preventing violent and conflict through effective communication. “I believe most conflicts starting due to miscommunication and misinformation within the communities,” he said.
