South Sudan youth body condemns attacks against civilians in Unity
May 26, 2020 (SSNN) – A South Sudan youth group has condemned this week’s attacks against in several parts of Unity state by armed men from neighboring Lakes and Warrap states in which an unconfirmed innocent people were killed.
“The leadership of the Liech Youth Union condemns in the strongest term possible the recent attacks on Unity State communities by bandits from the neighboring Lakes and Warrap States. Such barbaric acts are callous and unacceptable considering the current relative peace our communities are enjoying,” Liech Youth Union said in a statement extended to South Sudan News Now (SSNN).
“On 24th May 2020, criminals from Warrap launched an attack at Gamdhang cattle camps in Mayom County, Unity State. Again on 25th May 2020, a join-organized bandits from Lakes and Warrap States launched an attack at Mayom Payam in Payinjiar County in two separate attacks which were repulsed by the local civil defense; between 8: a.m. to11a.m, and 3p.m. to 5 p.m. local time respectively. In the same day, the assailants also launched an attack at in Madol Payam of Mayiendit County at around 5p.m local time,” the statement signed the group’s chairperson added.
“It was also noted with concerns that the attacks were planned and well-coordinated by those criminals which were heavily armed. The Liech Youths Worldwide are urging the Unity State populations to remain on high alert in defense of its civil population from any negative force in the pretext of cattle rustling.
“Finally, we are urging the Lakes and Warrap States communities to respect the Nuer-Dinka West Bank Peace and Reconciliation Conference of 1999 that was held in Wunlit, Warrap State. Failure to which may result to unnecessary counter-insurgencies among our peaceful communities.”
