South Sudan watchdog welcomes Kiir-Machar states agreement
June 20, 2020 (SSNN) – A South Sudan rights organization has welcomed the agreement between President Salva Kiir Mayardit and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny to bring to an end the issue of the states allocation which has been a sticking point in the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
In a statement extended to South Sudan News Now, the Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) said it “welcomes and applauds the parties for reaching an agreement on the allocation of states on 17th June 2020.”
“The CPA would like to categorically make it clear to the parties that signed the R-ARCSS that this breakthrough is not by any chance a favor to the South Sudanese, but a necessity because the South Sudanese populace is still suffering due to the unwilling and intransigence of the parties to implement an agreement they have penned and consented to implement.
“This breakthrough could not have come at a much better time than now. With the rampant insecurity witnessed countrywide, communal conflicts at a rise, the COVID-19 cases surging and with natural disasters like floods threatening the devastated country, this is a positive step in the right direction.
“Therefore, the Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) strongly calls on the parties to the agreement that they expedite the implementation of the agreement’s other outstanding issues like the security arrangement and constitutional amendment among others so that the country is set back to the path of normalcy.
“The R-ARCSS lays the foundation for a united, peaceful and prosperous society based on justice, equality, respect for human rights and the rule of law. For that reason, if his agreement is implemented in letter and spirit, it then averts the country from the past desolate and dark past.”
