South Sudan minister dies in Juba
June 2, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan’s minister for East African Affairs John Luk Jok has died this morning in the capital Juba after reportedly succumbing to COVID-19, officials said this morning.
One official at his office told South Sudan News Now (SSNN) that Luk was tested positive for coronavirus two weeks earlier and died succumbed to the virus this morning at his residence in Juba.
“Hon. John Luk Jok has died this morning. He died of coronavirus. He has been infected by the virus for two weeks now and this morning, he passed on,” one official told South Sudan News Now.
Luk is one of several South Sudan senior government officials who have been infected by COVID-19, the respiratory sickness caused by the novel coronavirus.
Others who are also battling the illness includes the First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar, two vice-presidents, James Wani Igga and Hussein Abdelbaggi and ministers of information and defense.
Luke has served as the first post independent South Sudan’s minister of Justice. He was fired when President Salva Kiir Mayardit reshuffled his cabinet in July 2013, months before the war broke out.
He was then forced into exile and returned following the signing of a 2015 peace agreement to serve as the country’s minister of transport.
He served under that role until President Salva Kiir sacked his cabinet last February to form the Revitalized Transitional government of National Unity (R-TgoNU) where he was appointed the minister for East African Affairs until his death this morning.
