April 3, 2020 (SSNN) — New armed clashes between the Manuer and Gak communities in the central South Sudanese state of Lakes led to the deaths of 13 people, parliamentary sources said Thursday.

Of the total number of deaths in these clashes, which occurred in recent hours in the town of Malueth, 11 are from the Manuer and two are Gak, said Assembly man Marik Manga.

Referring to the causes that triggered the events among these groups that have been fighting since last November 27, the source indicated that they broke out after the gak communities stole cattle from their opponents.

Inter-community clashes between pastoralists and farmers over control of fertile land or livestock are frequent in several areas of Southern Sudan.

Early last month, fierce clashes between populations of diverse ethnic origin in the city of Pibor in Jonglei State and its surroundings led to the displacement of some 5,000 civilians, according to the United Nations Mission in Southern Sudan (UNMISS).

This force, which seeks stability and peace in this African country, recently deployed armed detachments in areas where there are conflicts between communities.

South Sudan, on the other hand, is trying to achieve economic and social progress, after suffering a war from December 2013 to 2018, in which government forces and warring groups, among other actors, clashed.

Several years of armed conflict in this East African nation, unleashed by economic and social causes, left around 400,000 dead, and thousands injured and displaced, according to humanitarian sources.
