May 13, 2020 (SSNN) — South Sudan coronavirus cases on Wednesday surpassed the 200 mark after the high-level Taskforce said nine (9) more people tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

The high-level Taskforce said the latest positive tests were all of South Sudanese who were in contact with the people who tested positive for the virus earlier.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit said during a meeting with fellow East African leaders on Tuesday that he wished to impose total lockdown in the country days after having eased measures put forth by the high-level taskforce to curtail the virus.

The abrupt change of mind came after the UN Mission in South Sudan said that two people in civilian protection sites in Juba and Bentiu tested positive for the virus.

It remains unclear when the South Sudanese head of state would impose the lockdown.
