South Sudan army, SPLA-IO launch fresh attacks against NAS – spokesman
June 1, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) and its peace partner, the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO), have launched fresh military offensives against holdout opposition group, National Salvation Front (NAS) led by General Thomas Cirilo Swaka in Central Equatoria state, an opposition spokesman said.
Suba Samuel Manase, the spokesman for NAS said the former foes launched attacks on the opposition positions in Kajo-Keji, Lanya Morobo and Otogo of Central Equatoria state and in some parts of Maridi in Western Equatoria.
“The SSPDF and the SPLA-IO have declared war on our positions. The government is mounting its joint offensives on NAS and has deployed its forces on all the roads leading to Kajo-Keji, Yei-Juba, Yei-Congo and Yei Maridi so that they can be able to launch these attacks on our bases and locations,” Suba said as quoted by Radio Tamazuj.
However, Col. Lam Paul Gabriel, the SPLA-IO deputy spokesman denied separately the claim saying the SPLA-IO is not involved in anyway in the alleged offensive and instead accused the Cirilo-led movement of attacking the SPLA-IO.
“We don’t want war; we are moving toward implementation of the peace agreement. NAS needs to find right ways to join the peace agreement, not through war,” he said.
