May 9, 2020 (SSNN) — South Sudan’s president, Salva Kiir Mayardit, has been asked by a group of intellectuals from Jonglei state to create another administrative area there.

This came after the presidency issued a communique in which it said Jonglei state, alongside Western Bahr el-Ghazal and Western Equatoria, will be allocated to the SPLM-IO as part of a provision of a 2018 peace agreement.

In a statement seen by South Sudan News Now, the group of Intellectuals from Jonglei or Greater Bor calling themselves “the concerned citizens of Greater Bor” voiced their rejection.

They claim that peace cannot be achieved in Jonglei State if the Nuer and Dinka continue to co-exist in the same state pointing to 1991 political incident as a wound that never healed.

“We believe (that) peace and harmony will not be achieved as wounds are not yet recovered,” they said alluding to past bloody conflicts with the SPLA- Nasir faction in 1991 and with the Lou Nuer in 2013.

“We are demanding your high authority to give us our own Administrative Area so that we (can) live in Peace and Harmony,” they stressed in the two-page statement.
