April 1, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan policemen will be wearing masks during operations in which they will be enforcing measures imposed by the government to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, police spokesman Maj. Gen. Daniel Justin said on Tuesday.

“Now, arrangements are being made to provide Police and other security operatives with Personal Protective Equipment or PPE as they move to implement COVID-19 restrictions,” Justin said.

He added that the police have requested the High-Level Taskforce to combat coronavirus to “ensure security teams are protected as they enforce curfew, disperse gatherings and ensure closure of shops dealing in non-essential commodities among other national guidelines.”

Justin further urged the public to “report cases of harassment or use of excessive force by personnel implementing the coronavirus restrictions.”

“The police have a duty to enforce the law and protect the public but should do so professionally,” he said adding that the public “should cooperate with the Police and other security organs during the enforcement of the law.”

COVID-19-free

South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, has remained free of the novel coronavirus also known as COVID-19. The government said around 18 suspected cases tested since last month has come back negative.

Neighboring countries like Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya and Uganda have reported dozens of cases. The government have imposed several preventive measures including but not limited to curfew and banned of social gatherings.

The country which has been in a bloody civil war since December 2013 has also shut down its airports to international flights. Exception was made for humanitarian flights carrying food and medication to the country.
