April 2, 2020 (SSNN) — South Sudan parties negotiating the allocation of state governors are nearing an agreement as key opposition group is reportedly conceding, a senior government official said on Thursday.

The SPLM-IG, led by President Salva Kiir Mayardit, the SPLM-IO led by First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar have been – since last month – negotiating over how to allocate the state governors.

Speaking to South Sudan News Now this afternoon, a senior government official said on condition of anonymity that SPLM-IO was dropping its demand to have three governors.

“As I told you last week, the SPLM-IO was seeking to have three governors. Now, it is dropping the three states demand and coming to two states,” the senior government official said from Juba.

The government official said the formation of state governments will take place next week saying arrangements including the nomination of governors will be concluded over this weekend.

“Take this, the formation of the state governments will be done next week, maybe Monday or Tuesday. South Sudanese people cannot wait because we already have a crisis of the coronavirus,” the official said.

“A power vacuum cannot be taken by the pandemic,” he added.
