June 24, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Manawa Peter Gatkuoth Gual, has – on Tuesday – met a senior official of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) at his office in Juba, according to his office.

Mr. Guang Cong, the United Nations Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General paid a visit to Gatkuoth, a senior member of the main armed opposition group and a native of Jonglei state himself, in his office in Juba to discuss a range of issues.

The two men, according to the statement seen by South Sudan News Now, mainly discussed the ongoing inter-communal violence in Jonglei state.

“The Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hon. Manawa Peter Gatkuoth met today in his office with the Delegation of UNIMISS led by the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General Mr. Guang Cong,” the statement seen by South Sudan News Now partly reads.

It further added that the high-level meeting “focused mainly on [the] conflict resolution in Jonglei.”

Jonglei has in recent days seen a rise in inter-communal violence, especially between the Lou-Nuer community and Murle of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area.

The United Nations and other international bodies have called for an immediate formation of state governors to help resolve the violence and deescalate tensions.
