February 8th, 2020 (SSNN)—South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit and senior government officials have arrived in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to attend a high-level summit of the African Union heads of state and government.

“President Salva Kiir and his accompanying delegation arrived in Addis Ababa Ethiopia on Saturday morning for the 2020 African Union heads of state and government summit,” the Presidency stated.

The AU summit brought together regional leaders from African countries and is expected to commence on Sunday, 9 February in Ethiopia.

President Kiir and opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar are scheduled to hold talks on the sidelines of the high-level forum of the African Union in an attempt to discuss issues related to the number of states and their boundaries.

“President Salva Kiir and his accompanying delegation will participate in IGAD heads of state and government sideline meeting to discuss the progress in the implementation of South Sudan Revitalized peace agreement,” the presidency said on Saturday.

“The minister of Cabinet affairs Dr. Martin Elia Lomoro, Minister of Foreign affairs and international cooperation Awut Deng Achuil and Minister of information and communication Michael Makuei Lueth are accompanying President Salva Kiir to Addis Ababa to participate in the 2020 AU heads of state and government summit.”

The African Union adopted the theme of “Silencing the Guns: Creating Conducive Conditions for Africa’s Development” for the year 2020. It underscores the nexus between good governance, peace, stability and development.

It also calls attention to economic security and the vital links between sustainable and inclusive economic growth, job creation, conflict prevention, and peace and security.
