S. Sudan human rights entity condemns ceasefire violations in Jekou
January 6th, 2020 (SSNN)—The Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) an impartial human rights group, has strongly condemned attacks on the SPLA-IO forces by pro-government forces in Jekou, Upper Nile region on January 5, 2020 and urged the warring parties to cease violent confrontations in the area.
Ter Manyang Gatwech, CPA’s National Coordinator, said that South Sudan government must be held accountable for the repeated violations of the Cessation of Hostilities (CoH) in Maiwut.
“South Sudan Government should be held responsible for the direct violations of the Cessation of Hostilities in the country and we called upon South Sudan and SPLM-IO to respect the cessation of hostilities deal signed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia last year.”
The human rights activist called on all parties involved to strictly abide by international humanitarian law and human rights law.
“All Parties must comply with International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law. They must implement the CoHA and cease all forms of provocative activities.”
“As stipulated in the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan, the Parties should ensure that unimpeded movement is guaranteed for the safety of the civil population.”
The group remarked that it is part of its responsibility as an independent civil society body, to report with concrete evidence, violations of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement.
“It’s our role as civil society organizations to document and give a report with facts and evidence to the concern bodies or international community for that party (individuals) to be subjected in accordance with International Humanitarian Law and the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan signed on September 12, 2018, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The group urged the international community to take tougher measures against individuals who are against the implementation of the peace agreement.
“South Sudan Human Rights entity urges the international community for individual sanctions in order for South Sudanese ordinary citizens to enjoy peace.”
