June 3, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan’s National Salvation Front (NAS) led by General Thomas Cirilo has accused the SSDPF and SPLA-IO of killing fifteen (15) innocent civilians in the country’s Yei river county following an alleged offensive by the two peace partners.

Suba Samuel Manase, the spokesman for the NAS, said the South Sudan army and the SPLA-IO have continued their offensives against holdout opposition groups despite a recommitment to a 2017 ceasefire by the government and non-signatories to the revitalized peace agreement in Italy early this year.

“On 31st May 2020, the SPLA IO force under the joint command of Maj. Gen. John Mabiah and Maj. Gen. Moses Lokujo carried out summary execution of fifteen (15) innocent civilians in the villages of Loguni, Panyume Payam, Morobo County in Central Equatoria State,” Suba said in the statement seen by South Sudan News Now (SSNN).

“On 29th May 2020, a combined force of SSPDF and SPLA-IO followed the civilians who escaped to Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for safety. They attacked and tortured the civilians in addition to looting their properties,” the statement added.

Reports of continuation of fighting between the rebels and the government in recent weeks have alarmed analysts who believe that the civil war may not be ended by the 2018 revitalized peace agreement.

SPLM-IO led by the First Vice-President Dr. Riek Machar has distanced itself from the reported offensive and in stead accused NAS of attacking its bases.
