May 20, 2020(SSNN) — A cattle raid in South Sudan’s Mayom county of Bul-nuer, Unity State, that witnessed at least 17 death, among which 9 were soldiers, was reportedly led by a senior officer of the South Sudan Military Intelligence (MI).

Confidential sources from South Sudan military headquarters, Bilpham-Juba, alleged that the recent attacks in Mayom county were led by a MI officer, who was identified as Gen. Riiny Tueny, also known by his nickname as Wade Gabe, from Apuk Giir Thiik of Warrap State  – a report South Sudan News Now could not independently verify.

Speaking to media, South Sudan’s army Spokesman, Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang, confirmed that at least 9 officers were killed during the raids last week when the youth from Bul-nuer of Mayom county raided Mayen Jur of Apuk  of Warrap state.

“There were inter-communal clashes last week between the armed civilians in unity state,  these raiders had crossed into the neighboring Warrap, attacked a number of villages and they stole some cattle,” Lul said.

According to Maj. Gen. Lul, the SSPDF only has a “small post” in President Kiir’s home-state of Warrap and some of the soldiers from that post who tried to intervened were killed by the raiders.

“We had a small post that was deployed there sometime back to maintain law and order between the two states. That post was also attacked by the raiders and as a result, we lost nine servicemen.” Lul said.

During the Mayen Jur fighting on May 17, 2020, at least 23 people were killed.

Other reliable sources confirmed that officers like Major Deng Manon and Canal Gum Luk were killed in the recent raids.

The raids between Dinka youth of Warrap State and Nuer youth of Unity State have increased in the recent months and senior military officers like Gen. Riiny Tueny from Warrap State and Gen. Matthew Puljang of Unity State are suspected to be supplying and arming the youth on both sides.

Attempts by former governors of these states to resolve tribal feuds and cattle raids have failed.

Similar raids and intra-tribal feuds between Dinka youth against fellow Dinka youth have been witnessed both in Warrap and Lake states.

In other reports, tension remains high between the Murle and Lou-nuer youth following  devastating Murle-attacks on Lou-nuer’s Uror county on May 16, 2020.
