President Kiir, opposition representatives mark New Year Eve in Juba, urge citizens to cherish peace

January 1st, 2020 (SSNN)—South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit, representatives of the R-ARCSS signatory Parties and foreign dignitaries met on December 31, 2019 at the State House and held a year-end party officially hosted by the President’s office at the Presidential Palace in Juba.

“Senior Government Officials, representatives of Opposition parties who are signatories to the Revitalized Agreement, diplomatic Corp, and other dignitaries gathered at the State House on 31st December 2019 to mark the New Year Eve on the President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s invitation,” the Presidency stated in a statement this evening.

On an annual basis, the President’s Office prepares an official state banquet and is attended by senior government officials, foreign diplomats and regional representatives.

“The end of the year State dinner is an annual official function organized by the Office of the President for the ending of the year and welcoming of the new one,” the Presidential Press Unit said.

“It is an opportunity where President Salva Kiir interacts with members of his government, diplomats accredited to the republic of South Sudan and other dignitaries.”

President Kiir urged citizens to cherish peace and promote reconciliation in the country.

“President Salva Kiir calls for the people of South Sudan to embrace peace and reconciliation as they receive new year 2020 as they strive for building strong foundation for their young country.”

The President commended the East African Regional bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) for its consistency in working for peace and stability in East African countries.
