PMPC urges Ethiopian gov’t not to allow opposition forces to use its territory as launching pad
January 3rd, 2020 (SSNN)—The Provisional Military and Politcal Council (PMPC), a splinter faction led by Major General James Ochan Puot, has urged the Ethiopian government to beef up its border security and not allow the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-IO forces to use its territory as a launching pad for a military offensive against PMPC forces and the civilian population.
In a statement extended to SSNN, the
Spokesperson of the PMPC, Brig. Gen. Paul Puok Kang called on local authorities in the Gambella region to step up border controls to deter South Sudan’s combat operations on Ethiopian soil.
“I urge the Ethiopian government, especially the Gambella Regional State authorities, Nuer Zone and its five Woredas ( Districts ) to tighten border controls for the safety of their civil population so that they shouldn’t be used as human shields by the SPLM/A-IO commanders,” said Brig. Gen. Paul Puok Kang.
“Ethiopian villages should not be used by the SPLM/-IO as launching pads to fight government forces in South Sudan. This is a serious violation of international laws,” he added.
The spokesperson claimed that the PMPC forces killed an Ethiopian citizen and wounded six others.
“Their mobilization of Ethiopian citizens to involve in South Sudan’s conflict resulted in the death of one Ethiopian citizen and wounded six individuals.”
Maiwut and its surrounding areas have been hotspots since August, 2019.
On December 16, 2019, the ceasefire monitors, CTSAMVM, expressed grave concern over reports of clashes between the SPLA-IO and the PMPC forces and said it had carried out independent investigations into the incidents and areas of tension in Maiwut, Jokau and Turow and will present findings at the next CTC Meeting.
