Plane crash in Uror County of Jonglei State kills 10 people on board

Mar 2, 2021(SSNN) — A South Sudan commercial plane crashed on Tuesday in the Pieri area of Uror County, Jonglei State killing all the ten people who were on board.

According to some eyewitnesses, the plane which was carrying two crew members and nine passengers crashed immediately after takeoff from Pieri airstrip.

Eyewitness Sebit Kuol says the aircraft took off from Pieri airstrip at around 4:30 local time and crashed a few minutes later.

The Director of Juba International Airport, Kur Kuol confirmed the incident adding that they did not have full details of those on board because of the poor telecommunication network.

“News reaching us indicates that a commercial plane has crashed in the town of Pieri in Jonglei state while setting off for Juba,” Kuol said.

In a statement, the governor of Jonglei, Denay Jock Chagor condoled with the families and friends of those who perished in the accident.

“Our prayers are with their families and loved ones. On my own behalf and on behalf of the people of Jonglei state and the nation, I share this condolence message with the affected families and friends in these hours of grief,” Chagor said in a condolence message released by his office.

“It was with great shock and horror to receive the news of the plane crash of South Supreme Airlines that happened today, the 2nd day of March 2021 at around 5 pm at Pieri Airstrip,” he added.

Early on, former Chairman of the Lou-Nuer community in Nairobi, Kenya,  Nyang Mar had expressed his sadness for the loss of the 10 people on board the plane.

“Death has robbed off the Uror family, a plane has just crashed at Pieri airstrip killing 8 including two pilots. Two are in critical condition. The incident happened at exactly 5:05PM.” Nyang Maar said.

“My hometown of Pieri in Jonglei State has been hit today at 5:05 pm by a plane crash that claims the lives of 10 ( 6 passengers & 2 pilots). Exact details are yet to be unveiled to us from there. May God console and comfort the affected families,” said Nyang Mar, former Chairman of the Lou-Nuer community in Nairobi, Kenya.

Those who died in the crash include 2 pilots, 2 children, a man, and six women.
