NCYPD Conference calls for Peace, Tolerance and Unity

Dec 15th, 2019 (Kampala)– The Nuer Christian Youth for Peace and Development (NCYPD) held a three- day annual peace conference in Ugandan capital, Kampala. The conference began on December 11th to 13rd 2019 at Makerere Kikoni in Uganda under the theme “Kɛn ti gor kɛ i bi ruac kɛ Naath ɛ kan mi tekɛ luth Kuoth kɛnɛ mal kamni Naath” It literally means Salvation, Tolerance and peace among people.

The NCYPD peace conference brought together over 400 participants from different denominations Churches including the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan and Sudan, St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Nazarene and Christian Temple Church in Uganda to discuss issues affecting the people of South Sudan in Uganda “The aim of the peace conference is to promote peace, unity and national reconciliation among Nuer communities and South Sudanese residing in Uganda”, says Rev. John Yual Nguth co- founder of NCYPD and leading pastor at the Nazarene Christian in Kampala.

Stephen Lieh Machot Gai a Pastor and preacher at the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan and Sudan, says “peace will come when we learn the importance of tolerance have respect for one another and accept our own mistakes, whether we are political or religious leaders in South Sudan”.

Ater Jock, head of the Christian Temple Church says, “We are all equal in the Eyes of God and deserve equal treatment.”

The religious leaders quoted a number of verses in the Bible that illustrate the importance of tolerance and unity.

Some of the scriptures read were 1st John 1:9, Mark 16:15 and Revelation 3:21.

They also encouraged the participants to familiarize themselves with other books on tolerance at their own pace.

Ter Manyang Gatwech, a prominent and leading human rights defender and National Coordinator of Network of South Sudan Civil Society Organizations in Uganda urged the participants particularly religious to work towards promoting peace and human rights, whether at the grassroots, national and international levels to work towards for a better South Sudan.

“Our main objective is to transform South Sudan and make it admired by everyone in Africa and the world at large,” said the human rights advocate, Ter Manyang Gatwech.

He also request religious leaders to put more pressure on South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Chairman of the SPLM-IO, Dr. Riek Machar to form a Unity Government in February 2020 without further delay.
