Makuei says he is recovering, denies reports Kiir is sick
May 25, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan Information Minister and government spokesman Michael Makuei Lueth has said that he is recovering from COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus.
“Well I am fine and I am recovering. I haven’t experienced any symptom of the corona[virus]. I think by next week I will be well,” Makuei told South Sudan News Now (SSNN) from his residence where he is being quarantined in Juba.
The government spokesman further denied reports that President Salva Kiir was sick saying he is fine and discharging his duties at the State House J1.
“As we speak, the president of the republic H.E Salva Kiir is in his office in Juba here. He has not been diagnosed with corona[virus]. He is fine and healthy and will appear on the television today or maybe tomorrow,” Makuei said.
The senior government official is one of a team of senior government officials who have been diagnosed with the coronavirus disease last week.
The First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and his wife Angelina Teny who is also the country’s minister of defense have been tested positive with the killer disease.
Alongside Makuei, the two are the only senior government officials to test positive for coronavirus but said yesterday in an appearance on the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) said they were recovering from the virus.
South Sudan cases have seen sharp increase in recent days. The overall tally stands at 655 as of Saturday after 92 increase. There have been eight deaths so far as result of the virus. Only six people have recovered from the virus.
