June 6, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan’s First Vice President and SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny and his wife, Angelina Jany Kuma Khan (or Angelina Teny) – who is also the minister of defense – have today celebrated their 39th marriage anniversary which also coincides with Teny’s 60th birthday.

The two met in Khartoum, Sudan in late 1970s and married in June 1981 at Kosti, White Nile state where Mrs. Teny was studying at a secondary school.

Machar at the time was studying engineering at the prestigious University of Khartoum.

In a statement this evening, Machar’s office said the two “wish every other couple – and the people of South Sudan at large – good health during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.”

“They also expressed hope for a sustainable peace, unity and prosperity of the people in our young nation,” the statement added.

Both Machar and Teny are well educated. Machar holds a PhD of strategic planning from Bradford University in the UK.

Mrs. Teny was also educated in Great Britain as well and speaks both English and Arabic fluently. She is one of the most prominent women politicians in South Sudan.

In November 2003 Angelina Teny facilitated a conference of South Sudan women on “The House of Nationalities”, held in Lokichokio, a concept designed to foster peace and national unity through recognition of diversity.
