Machar not coming to Juba today- official
February 4th, 2020 (SSNN)—The planned visit to Juba of South Sudan’s main armed opposition leader, Dr. Riek Machar to hold consultation meetings on the number of states with President Salva Kiir Mayardit, has been postponed, according to the SPLM-IO Director for Information and Public Relations, Puok Both Baluang.
“H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon planned visit to Juba, South Sudan for the Consultation Meeting of the Parties to the R-ARCSS on the Number of States and their Boundaries, scheduled for 4 – 5 February in Juba, has been canceled,” said the SPLM-IO official.
On Monday, the SPLM-IO deputy spokesperson, Manawa Peter Gatkoth told reporters that the head of the SPLM-IO, Dr. Riek Machar will arrive in Juba on Tuesday to continue discussing other outstanding Pre-transitional Tasks with President Salva Kiir.
The spokesperson revealed that if the two leaders do not agree on the number of states and their internal boundaries, then the leadership of the SPLM will not be part of the next Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity.
“If we don’t agree, then how do we form the government without the number of states?” Manawa questioned.
Adding that, “If they agreed on the proposal of the deputy president of South Africa, then next tomorrow they will sign the agreement and move forward.”
Last month, the opposition leader, Dr. Riek Machar returned to Khartoum, after differing over the number of states and their boundaries with President Salva Kiir Mayardit
