The SPLM-IO leadership appeals to the East African Regional Bloc, to define Machar’s status and lift restrictions imposed on him.
“We are expecting, at the Summit, the determination of the status of H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon from his house arrest and lifting of the restrictions imposed upon him since August 2016.”
Machar has been under house arrest since August 2016 and is not allowed to travel and speak to the media.
UNMISS wants Machar released from house arrest
Last week, the Special Representative of the Sectary-General and head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), David Shearer called upon the regional bloc (IGAD) to lift all restrictions imposed on South Sudan’s main armed opposition leader, Dr. Riek Machar Teny.
“This ongoing obstacle is surely not difficult to fix by IGAD and the government. IGAD should lift all restrictions. And the South Sudan Government should issue Dr. Machar with a passport – in the spirit of building trust and confidence,” the UN statement partly reads.
