Machar dispatches aides to de-escalate tensions inside PoC

June 9, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan’s main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny has dispatched a team of aides to the UN protection of civilians site in Juba to de-escalate tensions following fighting inside the base over the weekend.

The fighting over unknown reasons on Friday and Saturday left over 170 people injured.

Speaking to South Sudan News Now on Tuesday, a senior SPLM-IO official said Machar who is also the SPLM-IO leader sent a team of senior government and SPLM-IO officials to the UN POC site in Juba to calm down the situation after fighting stopped.

“The First Vice President, the Chairman and Commander in Chief of the SPLM/SPLA (IO) yesterday dispatched a team of senior government and SPLM-IO officials to the site of the IDP protection to calm down the unfortunate situation which has caused regrets over the weekend,” the senior government official said.

“The team is led by the minister of water and irrigation, Cde Manawa Peter Gatkuoth Gual and former governor of Liech state Hon. Tor Tungwar Kueiguong. The situation and been deescalated and the people there have returned to their normal brotherly life,” the official said.
