June 15, 2020 (SSNN) — A Lebanese man contracted by South Sudan’s COVID-19 taskforce in the fight against the novel coronavirus has fled the country with $3 million, a senior government official has said.

The government official who spoke to South Sudan News Now on condition of anonymity said the contractor who he identified as Feraj was given $3 million to unveil a roadmap for the country’s COVID-19 battle.

The official said Feraj, following the infection of vice-resident Hussein Abdelbaggi with COVID-19, decided to hide and then the government had to learned that he had left the country via Juba International Airport via a cargo plane.

“He was contracted by vice-president Hussein Abdelbaggi and given three millions US dollars to help draw a roadmap to fight the coronavirus,” the official said.

“A few days after Hussein got infected, we couldn’t contact him. We asked the former undersecretary Dr. Makur Koriom who personally met him for the contract, to look for him but we learned that he had left the country on May 28,” the official said.

He further revealed that “it was the reason why president Salva Kiir dismissed Makur.”
