Nov 11th, 2019 (SSNN)-South Sudan’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Michael Makuei Lueth in an unprecedented statement has announced that plans are underway to end the accommodation of all opposition members currently being accommodated in paid hotels in Juba, saying the government is no longer responsible for them and their continuation in the bush.

“They [opposition officials] are only trying to complicate issues, and this is not acceptable – we will not continue to tolerate it. However, the government will not be ready to continue accommodating everybody in both hotels, because it has now become another process…So this is not our concern but this is a message to them also that we are not responsible for your continuation in the bushes of South Sudan but it’s your leadership,” said Information Minister Michael Makuei Lueth.

It’s unclear what prompted South Sudan’s government to issue such a strong-worded statement, however, political analysts believe that the recent extension of the pre-transitional period spearheaded by the main armed opposition group, SPLM-IO and the National Democratic Movement (NDM) might have changed the government’s willingness to continue to accommodate opposition officials in Juba.

South Sudan’s government and opposition leaders agreed during a Tripartite Summit held in Entebbe, Uganda on November 7 to delay the formation of a unity government for 100 days, starting on Tuesday, November 12, a move criticized by the United States, the United Kingdom and Norway.
