Kiir warns against nominating “militants” as governors
April 1, 2020 (SSNN) — South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has reportedly warned on Wednesday against nomination of those he termed as militants as governors in the states.
This comes as parties reaches deadlock over the allocation of state governors as provided for in the revitalized peace agreement signed in September 2018.
Speaking to South Sudan News Now this evening, a senior government official said on condition of anonymity that president Kiir warned the various parties of nominating militants for gubernatorial positions.
“President Salva Kiir has made it very clear that militants should not be appointed as governors during the transitional period because this will be the same people who will spoil this peace deal,” the government official said.
“So, we expects that the parties will conduct their selection with an open mind,” the official said.
