June 15, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan’s president, Salva Kiir Mayardit, and First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, are preparing for a meeting in the Egyptian capital Cairo next week in a talk that will be hosted by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, a senior government official has said.

The meeting, the senior government official said, will discuss the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement, but will entirely focus on the deadlock over the allocation of the states which has emerged as a thorny part in the implementation of the 2018 agreement.

Speaking to South Sudan News Now this morning, the senior government official said President al-Sisi has invited the two former foes for talks on the states which Cairo now sees as the most difficult part in the implementation of the South Sudan agreement.

“The President of the Arab Republic of Egypt has invited the main signatories of the revitalized agreement. These are of course H.E Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit, the president of the republic, and Dr. Riek Machar Teny, the First Vice President,” the official said from Juba on condition of anonymity.

“There will be a meeting, likely next week, and that meeting will discuss the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement and will mostly focus on the issue of the number of states,” the official said.
