Kiir asks Deng Alor to nominate replacement for John Luk
June 4, 2020 (SSNN) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has asked Deng Alor Kuol, the leader of former political detainees (SPLM-FDs), to nominate a person to replace late John Luk Jok as the country’s minister for East African Affairs, a aide said.
This comes exactly two days after Luk – who in the past served as South Sudan’s minister of justice – died in Juba of unidentified sickness.
Luk is a senior member of the SPLM-FDs who served on the ticket of the group, first as minister of transport until his appointment as east African affairs minister in February this year, as part of implementation of a 2018 peace agreement.
Speaking to South Sudan News Now (SSNN) today, a senior member of the SPLM former political detainees said the president asked Alor during a phone call on Wednesday to name a nominee for the ministry.
“The president of the republic has asked the leader of former detainees, Deng Alor Kuol to name a person to take over the ministry [of east African affairs]. You know Hon. John Luk passed on on Tuesday morning and the ministry need a person,” the official said on condition of anonymity.
The official said Alor will name a person to replace the veteran politician anytime today or tomorrow “and the ball will only be in the court of H.E Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit, the president of the Republic of South Sudan.”
