May 22, 2020 (SSNN) — South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has arrived in the Egyptian capital Cairo in a surprise trip, a South Sudan embassy staff in Cairo said this morning.

“The President of the republic is here in Cairo. He arrived on Thursday and he will stay here for a number of days to discuss bilateral relations with the Egyptian president,” the South Sudan diplomat told South Sudan News Now (SSNN) this morning from Cairo.

Another source in Juba separately said Kiir was evacuated to Cairo after he contracted COVID-19, the sickness caused by the novel coronavirus. The source said Kiir has been battling declining health situation in recent days.

“The president’s health situation has been declining in recent days. After he was infected by the coronavirus, he has not felt well since last week,” the source said.

President Salva Kiir and some senior government officials have not publicly declared their coronavirus status but several sources close to the South Sudanese head of state have disclosed that Kiir has been found positive.

His first deputy Dr. Riek Machar, minister of defense Angelina Teny and information minister Michael Makuei have announced publicly that they have been found positive for the virus.
