Oct 10, 2019 (SSNN)-South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit and his accompanying delegation left on Thursday morning for the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to meet IGAD leaders.
“The President of the Republic, H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit traveled to Addis Ababa this morning.”
According to presidential media, PPU, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit will hold meetings with IGAD heads of state and government, on the implementation of the IGAD-led peace agreement signed on September 12 last year.
“President Kiir, on his one-day visit is expected to meet with his regional counterparts in Addis Ababa to discuss the progress made in the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement in South Sudan,” said South Sudan’s PPU.
In August, the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) set a time-frame for a face-to-face meeting between South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit and opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar, but Kiir refused to meet with his arch rival Dr. Riek Machar.
In May, South Sudan Government and Opposition groups extended the Pre-transitinal period to November 12, however, there are concerns that a unity government may not be formed if the Parties to R-ARCSS do not agree on outstanding issues.
Recently, the US government has threatened to impose further sanctions on South Sudanese leaders believed to be undermining the peace process in the country.
