Kiir and Hemeti discuss Abyei incident

January 23rd, 2020 (SSNN)—South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the Deputy Chairperson of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo have held a meeting on the recent incident in which more than 30 civilians, including children, were indiscriminately killed by armed men from the Misseriya tribe in the Disputed Abyei region.

“President Salva Kiir Mayardit met with the Deputy Chairperson of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo Hemeti, at the State House on Thursday. President Kiir and Mr. Hamdan discussed issues including the tragic incident in Abyei that claimed more than twenty lives, and left hundreds homeless, as well as issues concerning the progress of the peace negotiations between the Sudanese government and armed movements,” the Presidency said this evening.

According to PPU, the Presidential Advisor on Security Affairs, Tut Kew Gatluak said the South Sudan government is dismayed at the tragic loss of innocent lives and the destruction of property caused by the militants.

“In addition, Mr. Tut said the government of South Sudan condemned the Abyei incident, and the President directed the formation of a fact finding committee to visit the area, and proposed a deployment of unified forces comprising of South Sudan Peoples Defence Forces and Sudan Armed Forces to Abyei.”

On his part, the Deputy Chairperson of the Sudanese Sovereign Counci, Mohamed conveyed a message of condolences from the Chairperson of the Sovereign Council, Abdul Fatah El Burhan, condemning the Abyei incident and vowing that the perpetuators must be brought to justice.

“Hemeti also appreciated the government of South Sudan for their effort of bringing peace in Sudan. The Sudanese government and the armed movements, are expected to sign security arrangements in Juba.”
